From 19:30 until 22:00
Venue: St Mary’s Church, Edward Road Dorchester, Dorset DT1 2HL
The Villiers Quartet are the Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Oxford and Nottingham High School.
Hailed as one of the most charismatic and “adventurous” quartets of the British chamber music scene (The Strad), the Villiers Quartet have developed an international reputation as exceptional interpreters of English composers including Elgar, Delius, Fricker, Bush. Formed in 2010, their Fricker recording was CD of the month in the Strad, “A true discovery” Classical Zaken, “Moments of supreme radiance” Europadisc.
- Sterndale Bennett: String Quartet in G Major (1831)
- Delius: “Late Swallows" From the original Quartet RT VIII/8 of 1916 (third movement).
- Anthony Payne - String Quartet No. 3
- Elgar: String Quartet in E minor.
- James Dickenson violin
- Tamaki Higashi violin
- Carmen Flores viola
- Nick Stringfellow cello
‘Elgar’s only string quartet, a masterpiece of the chamber music repertoire premiered in 1918, is well established. That of his contemporary Delius, dating from a year earlier, is more of a rarity. The composer was discontented with his first (three-movement) attempt and reworked the opening movement and the wistful “Late Swallows” slow movement. The Villiers Quartet, formed in 2011 and specialists in English music (among other things; they are an inquisitive ensemble), play the Delius with zest and passion. Their Elgar, too, is febrile and bold. Fresh playing all round, at budget price. THE OBSERVER’ (of their CD)
Dorset County Museum Music Society
Six fine professional chamber concerts given in St Mary’s Church and the United Church Dorchester. These temporary venues are necessitated by the closure of the Dorset County Museum building and its wonderful Victorian Hall, the home of the DCMMS for 44 years, during the extensive and hugely exciting building works - Tomorrow's Museum for Dorset - funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund. We look forward to our return to the Museum for the start of the 2020/2021 season.
