Archaeology Unearthed:  Verging on the Atlantic: Bronze Age connectivity between Iberia and the British Isles

Dr Catriona Gibson,  Post-doctoral Researcher, University of Reading

This talk will focus on the Beaker and Early Bronze Age periods (2650-1700 BC); times when Atlantic Europe from Scotland in the north to Spain in the south became plugged into wider exchange and communication networks. Thanks to a wealth of new techniques and data, such as isotope and ancient DNA analysis, archaeologists can now trace the movement of objects and people in the past with increased precision. Starting with the emergence and spread of the ‘Beaker package’ throughout parts of Europe, the reasons for and ramifications of such interactive spheres will be explored.

Catriona Gibson is currently a post-doctoral researcher on the project Grave Goods: Objects and Death in later Prehistoric Britain, based at the University of Reading. Her PhD at the University of Reading focused on the later Bronze Age of Western Iberia. She has worked extensively in both commercial and academic archaeology. After many years in the field, she became a researcher on the Ancient Britain in the Atlantic Zone project (ABrAZo), and helped develop the AHRC-funded Atlantic Europe in the Metal Ages Project (AEMA) both based at the University of Wales. Her research interests include exploring evidence for connectivity and mobility during later prehistory, and forging stronger links between developer-led and academic archaeology.  She has also worked on archaeological investigations abroad, including Portugal, Turkey, Jordan and Egypt, and currently supervises excavations at the Ness of Brodgar in Orkney.
