Geology Revealed: Fossil Collecting
Since the late 1970’s, the management of fossil collecting along the West Dorset coast has been the subject of much argument and debate, predictably greater since the introduction of the collecting code for West Dorset in 1998 and its inclusion in the management plan for the World Heritage Site. The code represents the pragmatic approach, a realistic compromise between key stakeholders. The dogmatic approach would mean much stricter controls. Are they necessary? Could they be enforced? David, a keen conservationist began fossils 68 years ago. He began selling fossils surplus to his collection in the mid 1970’s and has been a professional collector since then.
