Ancient Dorset

Who were the ancient peoples of Dorset? How did they live? How like us were they? Let Ancient Dorset take you on a journey through the lives of the ancient Britons, Romans, Saxons and Vikings who lived on the South Dorset Ridgeway.

Learn about the impact they had on the landscape and marvel at the everyday things they left behind: the pots and pans they cooked with; the brooches that held their cloaks in place. Discover their treasured possessions, coveted status symbols, tools and weapons.

Alongside these personal items you can witness for yourself a deeply thought-provoking display of the recently discovered remains of Viking men who were beheaded and buried in a mass grave with fifty of their kinsmen. The execution of these men tells of a clash of cultures, and their harrowing story still resonates today.
