Contributions for the Proceedings should be on subjects related to the archaeology, history, literature, geology or natural history of Dorset. While there is no fixed length, papers ideally should not exceed 7000 words, although longer papers will be considered if of sufficient importance. Notes and Shorter Contributions are also welcome. The Hon. Editor will be pleased to advise and discuss with intending contributors at any stage during the preparation of their work. All papers submitted are refereed by academic consultants.
Papers must be submitted for consideration by the end of November and shorter contributions and reports by the end of January for publication in June.
Please submit two paper copies of the text, together with a copy on disk, and including one set of original illustrations and a second set of photocopies. Authors are asked to include a word count at the beginning of their typescript. A further copy should be retained by the author.
The typescript copy you submit must be complete, and please number the pages, by hand if necessary. Please do not 'design' your typescript or use an automatic formatting or style sheet or automatic note-numbering facility - these will get lost in typesetting.
In short, please treat your computer like a simple typewriter. Leave a reasonably sized margin on the left-hand side of at least 25mm and please do not justify the margin on the right; leave it 'ragged'. Avoid dividing words with a hyphen at the ends of lines.
Please print on one side only, use a single size of font, and use double spacing throughout, including Notes, Tables, References and Bibliography.
Please ensure that all Notes are printed at the end of your typescript and that the Bibliography is complete and corresponds exactly with citations in the text.
Please note that underlined words in the text will automatically be replaced with italic type. If you want a word underlined, please make a note of this on your paper copy and in your covering letter.
Illustrations need to be clear and easily reproducible. Bear in mind that your illustrations may have to be reduced or enlarged to fit either column or page width. Please submit original illustrations separately (including Tables), with labels and captions consistent with the text. Please do not integrate them in the text. Where an original image has not yet arrived but is imminent, a photocopy may be submitted as in interim measure.
Prepare a separate list of captions (NOT marked on the back of the illustrations), typed in double spacing. The caption list should include full details of sources and copyright acknowledgements if appropriate. Number captions consecutively in Arabic numerals in the same sequence as the illustrations are referred to in the typescript.
Line drawings, charts, maps, diagrams and (black and white) photographic plates may be submitted as original paper copies, or as scanned files (of original copies) or as digital illustrations. Digital images of line illustrations should be produced at 1000dpi if they are to reproduce satisfactorily. For half-tones (photographs) 300dpi should suffice. When submitting text or graphics on disc, Word or Rich Text Format files are preferred for text, jpeg or tiff format for graphics. Jpeg files should be saved immediately as tiff files before carrying out any manipulation, saved to 100% of final publication size and as Grey Scale.
Please note that original illustrations/graphics are preferred by the printer as this ensures correct calibration.
References: The Harvard system of referencing (author, date and page, in brackets in the text) is preferred; with the full reference cited at the end of the paper in the Bibliography. For examples, see recent issues of the Dorset Proceedings.
The journal name should be given in full, and the place and publisher of books and monographs. References in footnotes should be avoided if at all possible.
Thus reference to a paper cited in the text which reads (Hinton 1994, 11) will be found in the Bibliography as Hinton, David A., 1994 'Some Anglo-Saxon charters and estates in south-east Dorset', Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society 116, 11-20.
A single reference to a book or monograph (Mills 1977, 230-1) will read Mills, A. D., 1977 The Place-names of Dorset, Part 1. English Place-name Society.
A reference to a whole book (Arkell 1933) will read Arkell, W.J., 1933 The Jurassic System in Great Britain. Clarendon Press, Oxford.
For a paper in another publication (Ward 1990) will read Ward, L. K., 1990 'Management of grassland-scrub mosaics' , in S. H. Hillier, D. W. H. Walton and D. A. Wells (eds), Calcareous Grasslands - Ecology and Management. Bluntisham Books, Huntingdon, 134-39.
Endnotes can be used for specific information that cannot otherwise be comfortably incorporated in the main body of the text.
Publication of a paper, note or report by the Proceedings does not necessarily imply that the DNHAS endorses the views expressed. Although the Editorial team endeavours to publish work that is academically sound, responsibility for content and opinions expressed rests with the individual authors.
Copyright in the Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society rests with the Society. For DNHAS Monographs copyright rests with both the Society and with individual contributors. Copyright of articles arising from material submitted for the Mansel-Pleydell Essay Prize belongs to the Mansel-Pleydell Trustees. Authors should ensure that if they use material protected by copyright permission to use it must be obtained by the author in advance and in writing, and indicate to the Hon. Editor any specific form of acknowledgment.
Charging Policy: The Society does not normally charge the costs of printing to individual contributors but may reserve the right to charge when papers or shorter articles derive from funded developer-contracts or are in receipt of grants from local or national bodies. Publication is expensive. The Hon. Editor is always pleased to hear of societies or bodies - or even individuals - who may be willing to offer financial assistance in the publication of a paper or report of particular interest to them. Full acknowledgement will, of course, be given.
The Society reserves the right to make a charge to individual authors for any major corrections or alterations made to page proofs (errors made in typesetting are, of course, excepted).
Ten off-prints of each paper will be given free (to be shared between co-authors). Offprints are not given for Notes and Shorter Contributions.
