Thomas Hardy's architectural career is not considered a success. Seen usually as a mere prelude to his literary output, it is most often summed up by reference to the 'shockingly' suburban home he built himself at Max Gate. As part of its £14.9 million redevelopment, Dorset County Museum will soon be hitting the road with its unique ‘Pop Up’ Museum. By taking to the road, the Museum will visit communities across the county, giving them a unique insight and up-close experience of what the future Museum will look like. People will be able to experience some of the treasures from the Museum’s collection and have an opportunity to say what they would like to see in their future Museum.
This Summer, Dorset County Museum is pleased to welcome visitors to its own LIVE, onsite archaeological dig within the museums ancient grounds. Lost and forgotten for centuries, the ancient Roman road that lies beneath the museum is finally being uncovered and YOU are ALL invited to witness this unique event.
Just over two months ago staff and volunteers from the Dorset County Museum were joined by hundreds of well-wishers to say farewell to Dippy the dinosaur, the famous Diplodocus cast. The largest, oldest and most popular visitor ever to have stayed at the Museum. The true impact of Dippy’s stay can now be revealed.
As part of the Dorset AONB, South Dorset Ridgeway's 'Festival of Discovery', starting on Saturday 16 June and running up to and including Sunday 24 June, all entry to the Dorset County Museum will be free.
