Competition shout out for a budding scientist to help piece Dippy together
Dippy, the Natural History Museum’s iconic 292-piece Diplodocus will soon be arriving at Dorset County Museum as part of his UK tour, in partnership with the Garfield Weston Foundation
Transported in specially designed packaging crates, the reassembling of Dippy is a gigantorsaurus task to say the least. As such, Dorset County Museum needs the help of a local young scientist to complete the reconstruction.
Accompanying Lorraine Cornish, the Natural History Museum’s Head of Conservation, the winner will assist with Dippy’s reconstruction including the final topping out ceremony by placing the very last bone cast in place prior to Dippy’s presentation to the general public.
“We’re on the hunt for an enthusiastic scientist, someone who shares our passion for both the natural world and of course dinosaurs” Jon Murden, Museum Director explains. “Our search is not restricted to just Dorset, we want to hear from any 11-18 year olds from across the South West Region”.

To mark the historic arrival of Dippy the Diplodocus and thousands of visitors to Dorset County Museum, the town and local shop keepers are quite literally putting the welcome flags out. In a unique collaborative venture, The Dorchester Business Improvement District (BID) has agreed to support the Dorset County Museum and its hosting of Dippy by providing visitors with a range of visitor ‘Dippy Deals’.
Harry Swift from Eastleigh in Hampshire was drawn at random from hundreds of budding scientists to help assist the reconstruction of Dippy the Diplodocus at Dorset County Museum.
A chance for one lucky winner of our competition to assist with Dippy’s reconstruction including the final topping out ceremony by placing the very last bone cast in place prior to Dippy the dinosaur’s presentation to the general public.
